Man beats lover to death, succumbs to poison

A woman was yesterday morning beaten to death at Silver Beach, East Bank Essequibo by a lover who then poisoned himself.

Mohini ‘Baby’ Gobin, 46, of Mora/Sparta, East Bank Essequibo, was found in a pool of blood in the storeroom of a boathouse at Silver Beach, where she had been beaten with an iron pipe. She died while being transported to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, West Coast Demerara. Her assailant, identified only as “Ramesh,” 30, ingested a weed killer after the attack and he was briefly hospitalised before he succumbed.

Gobin is the latest victim in a recent wave of domestic violence attacks, including two over the last eight days in which the assailants made suicide attempts.

The attack occurred around 7:30am. According to a police statement, Ramesh went to Gobin’s home to collect his lunch and later left for work at Roden Rust, also on the East Bank of Essequibo, with her phone. As a result, Gobin went to his work place, where they had an argument over the phone, during which she was allegedly struck to her head with a piece of metal by the man.

A source close to the investigation told Stabroek News that the argument over the phone stemmed from Gobin being unable to explain how she obtained the instrument, which led the man to accuse her of infidelity. The murder weapon was an iron pipe, with which the man reportedly dealt Gobin several blows about her body and head. He then escaped to a nearby clump of trees, where it is suspected that he ingested a quantity of Gramoxone. He was later discovered foaming at the mouth and was subsequently admitted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) under police guard.

The source noted that Gobin and her husband separated some five years ago and she moved in with Ramesh, who was described as a very possessive person and someone who could not keep a job for very long. She and the man are said to have engaged in heated arguments on a regular basis.

‘Pon the last’

The dead woman’s brother, Annirood Gobin, told this newspaper that he was informed about the attack sometime around 8:25am and he rushed to the scene.

“Me just come home from wuk and then somebody call me and tell me that me sista get beat up, so me run, go there and see she in a pool of blood,” he said, adding that she was still alive, with the iron pipe next to her. He then put her into a waiting taxi, which transported her to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. “She been deh pon the last and while awe a carry she to the hospital she dead,” the grieving man recalled.

Annirood denied the couple was living together but admitted that there was a relationship. He said that she would normally cook for Ramesh and take the food to Silver Beach, where the man was working as a handyman.

He also told this newspaper that the couple had an argument earlier in the morning and Ramesh later took his bicycle and sped away in the direction of his work place. He was unsure how his sister later ended up at the man’s work place.

Following the discovery of his sister’s body, he said a manhunt was launched for Ramesh, who was found between the roots of a clump of mangrove trees by one of the dead woman’s son and his friend. There was green foam at his mouth. The man was soon after handed over to the police, who transported him to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, from where he was transferred to the WDRH.

Just over a week ago, another woman, Sharon Howell, 38, of Freeman Street, East La Penitence, was stabbed by her partner, Aubrey Peters, multiple times about the body, including to her shoulder, neck, stomach and head. Peters, who used the claw of a hammer to carry out the attack, ingested poison afterward. Howell and Peters both managed to survive.

Rhonda Thompson, 32, of Onderneeming, West Coast Berbice, was not so lucky. She was found dead with her throat slit on Sunday evening, after an attack that was carried out by her estranged husband, from whom she was separated. The husband, Kensley Thompson, drank Gramoxone and also slit his wrists and his neck. He later succumbed at the Georgetown Hospital, where he had been taken for treatment.
