Big jewellery robbery in Suriname

(de Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO ─ The armed men who daringly robbed the jeweller in the Ma Retraite Mall took over ten kilograms of gold valued at SRD 1.7 million. The police have not yet nabbed the five perpetrators.

‘There is nothing we can do but pray. Only God can help,’ concerned jeweller Dennis Lee tells de Ware Tijd. He cannot think of anything citizens and entrepreneurs could do to prevent such situations. I have an alarm installed, there are iron bars and I have security, what else can I do?’

Colleagues have been in constant contact since the accident to find ways to deal with the situation. They will propose a plan to Chinese organization which in turn will discuss it with the government. Lee is very concerned over the fact that the robbers dared to commit their crime in broad day light on a busy afternoon in a unit in the middle of the mall. He sympathizes with his robbed colleague. Another colleague downtown was robbed last week. He and his daughter are still hospitalized after receiving grievous bodily harm. The same jeweller was robbed earlier this year shortly before closing time.
