Relatives of the porter who was stabbed to death nine days ago at 14 Miles, Issano, are calling on the police to intensify their investigation since the case already appears to have gone cold.
Delrick Layne, 30, of Lot 35 Caribisi Hill, Bartica, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Hospital on July 17, where he was taken for treatment for suspected stab wounds about the body.
Police were dispatched to the area that same day to conduct investigations but to date nothing has been found.
On Tuesday the dead man’s brother Delroy Layne, refuted reports in other sections of the media which made claims that police had arrested a man linked to the murder.
“Today is seven days since my brother was killed and after so long we can’t hear anything. When we ask the police directly, they say they ain’t catch nobody and yet you seeing in the paper and on the news that they catch one man but that is rumour. Right now we want to know if anything is happening,” the man said.
Layne opined that the police are not taking the matter as seriously as they should and further suggested that more persons should be questioned, though as far as he knows this has not been done. “This is a murder and I think the police is taking it too lightly. They should go there and keep on investigating,” he said.
When asked about what he heard about the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death, the man said that he was told that his brother had been in a shop drinking when he became involved in a confrontation with two men.
“The driver who he went in with said that he was lying down in the truck and my brother was drinking in a shop when the two guys attacked him… I don’t know if the police even went to the shop already so the shopkeeper can help them identify who the men are because obviously it would be people who is go to the shop steady,” Layne suggested.
He added that relatives have made several attempts to speak with police regarding the matter but they haven’t been given any information. “The police got to find something or hold somebody. I don’t want this to be another unsolved mystery,” he said.
Delrick Layne had been delivering fuel to Issano, only accompanied by the driver of the truck when he was murdered.
