Man on probation after cursing wife over children’s school supplies

A man who cursed his wife after she approached him to discuss purchasing school supplies for their children was yesterday ordered to undergo counselling and he was placed on probation for one year.

Mark Singh admitted that on August 21, 2012, he used obscene language to common-law wife Sujata Persaud.

He was arraigned before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he said that he did indeed curse Persaud but added that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

An apologetic Singh claimed also that his wife neglects to pay adequate attention to their three children, while saying that their eldest child strays at times.

The court, however, reprimanded Singh about his conduct and cautioned that his was not the appropriate manner to have dealt with the situation.

Given a chance to speak, Persaud said that she would appreciate if her Singh stopped drinking as it is the source of “all their problems.”

She said that she asked Singh to sit with her to discuss purchasing school supplies for their children for the new school term when he began cursing her.

The presiding magistrate, who recalled the defendant previously appearing before her for charges emanating from alcohol abuse as well, sternly warned him to desist from abusing alcohol because of the numerous problems it is causing in his relationship.

The prosecution said that the parties were at home discussing purchasing school supplies for their children when Singh, who became annoyed, began using a series of expletives to Persaud.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant became afraid and reported the matter to the police, who subsequently contacted the defendant. The court was further told that Singh was notified of the offence committed to which he admitted and was later arrested and charged.

After hearing the case, the court ordered that Singh undergoes counselling while putting him on probation for one year.
