Mahaica man killed by out-of-control truck

A 44-year-old man died on Saturday night after he was struck down by a truck on the Bath Public Road after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Dead is Benjamin (only name) of Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara who was struck down by motor lorry GJJ 7722 at around 22:15 on Saturday.

The police in a release yesterday said that investigations revealed that the driver of the truck was proceeding along the roadway at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle and struck down the man after colliding with two parked motor cars,
Benjamin was taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced DOA.

The driver of the motor lorry has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
The man’s wife, Yasmattie Benjamin, yesterday told this newspaper that they had just left a wedding when the accident happened.

“We were dancing and enjoying we self when he say he ready to go home and we come and met one of his friends and then he said he going and get something to drink,” the grieving woman said.

She said her husband crossed the road “good, good” and a little later she heard a deafening noise and when she turned around she saw a trucking speeding up the road. The woman said after the truck passed she recognized that her husband was on the road way. She said there was blood everywhere on the road. Immediately after the accident the driver went into hiding and the woman said the police took control of the truck and even held the father of the man. The driver is known to the family.

The woman said she had been married to the man for the past fifteen years and according to her he was a “loving, caring and a good husband and hard working person.” Even though the two have no children together the man has two daughters.
