Protest action set for Vreed-en-Hoop station over guns drawn on boy, 12

A picketing exercise will be held in front of the Vreed en Hoop Police Station to protest the recent actions of the police in Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara including the pointing of guns at a 12-year-old boy.

This is according to the child’s mother Sonia Boyce who told Stabroek News yesterday that statements were taken from them as regards the incident which occurred last Friday around 6 pm.

She stated that as advised she, her child and her mother Elsa Cameron visited the Commander at the Leonora Police Station. According to Boyce, the Commander questioned the actions of his ranks before taking statement from the child and Cameron.

When asked about the incident yesterday Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell said that he was unaware of such a case.

Residents told this newspaper on Saturday that recently a group of policemen headed by a cadet officer has been targeting Middle Street. They said young men are the targets, particularly those with cycles.

An upset Cameron had recounted to this newspaper that her grandson was practicing for sports on the road when the police arrived, as a result of which he and the other children ran in different directions.

She said she heard the child hollering for her and when she looked out she saw about ten policemen with guns around him. One of them was holding onto the child by his clothing.

When she inquired what the problem was she was told that the child was wanted at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station for questioning but none of the policemen could say what for. She said during the episode guns were pointed at the child and the policemen also threatened to lock her up. They later left after she held onto the child.

Cameron called the actions of the policemen unprofessional and pleaded for those in authority to act as the incident and the constant patrolling of the have children and youths traumatized.
