Cop charged with raping woman at Enmore outpost

-released on $500,000 bail

A police officer was yesterday charged with raping a woman at the Enmore Police Outpost, on the East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to a release, Police Constable Orin Heyligar was charged with rape allegedly committed on the woman at the Enmore Police Outpost on July 1. The woman had been detained at the outpost at the time the attack allegedly occurred.

Heyligar appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court and was placed on $500,000 bail.

Police spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker had stated in a release in July that the woman made a report to the Divisional Headquarters at Cove and John, alleging that she had been sexually assaulted by the officer during the morning of Sunday, July 1. The report had been made two days after.

The police release said that the woman was arrested the day before by police at Enmore for domestic violence and was held at the outpost before she was placed on bail. It is during this time the woman claimed she was raped by the constable. The rank was subsequently placed under close arrest.

In yesterday’s release, the name of the alleged victim was identified—a move which is inconsistent with police statements on such sensitive matters.
