No bail for accused in knife-point robbery

Scrap metal labourer Leon Fredericks, who is alleged to have robbed a man of his BlackBerry phone using a knife, was remanded yesterday by Magistrate Faith McGusty.

Fredericks, 21, of Lot 6 McDoom, East Coast Demerara, was arraigned on a charge of armed robbery, which was allegedly committed on October 13 in Georgetown. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court heard that while being armed with a knife, Fredericks stole a BlackBerry Curve smartphone, valued $40,000, from Joshua Singh.

No further details of what transpired were presented to the court.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that an offensive weapon was used in the robbery.

Fredericks was subsequently remanded to prison and the case was transferred to Court One for today.
