Albouystown man remanded over ganja possession

-police say were pelted by residents

Albouystown resident Mark Kemble Pierre was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge that he was found by police with 31 grammes of cannabis in his possession.

Pierre, 28, was charged with possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

His lawyer Ronald Burch-Smith told the court that his client said he was assaulted by police officers when he was being arrested on November 10, in Albouys-town.

Burch-Smith further said that his client was pushed down with an infant  in his hand and struck with a gun to his right ear, during a scuffle between him the officer.

In response to the assault allegations, police prosecutor Denise Booker said that the accused was being chased by the police after he was spotted and was summoned by one of the officers.
Booker said also that during the chase, residents in the Albouystown area began retaliating against the police by pelting a number of objects, which resulted in Pierre’s injuries.

The magistrate subsequently refused bail to Pierre and adjourned the case to December 13, when it will be called in Court One.
