Sophia fire leaves one homeless

A fire, suspected to be arson, destroyed an ‘A’ Field Sophia, home around 8 am yesterday leaving one man homeless.

Fifty-three-year-old, Jagdeo Sarjou, who left his home earlier in the morning is now homeless. Sarjou estimated his losses to be around $1 million, since everything he owned was destroyed. Nothing was saved from the house, which had no electricity, the man said that he did not leave any stove or lamp on which may have resulted in the fire.

The cause of the fire is not clear, but Sarjou’s daughter, Tiffany Fields, said they believed her boyfriend may have set the house on fire because shortly after he left the premises, smoke was seen coming from the house.

The fire managed to spread to the house next door destroying the guttering but persons managed to soak the building with buckets thereby preventing further damage.

Sarjou told this newspaper that he left his daughter in the house around 5 am to go out. He said he was a street away when someone called him and told him that smoke was coming from his house. He said, “dey seh look black smoke coming from behind duh coconut tree. So I seh no mussy somebody burning rubbish, and dey say go so I run and come and see everything bun.”

His daughter told this newspaper that she left the house after her father and went to her grandmother’s house. She said she had left her boyfriend in her apartment, which is located in front of the building, because they had an argument earlier in the night and went to her father’s home.

Her boyfriend and her father also had an argument during which he threatened to kill him.

It is believed that as a result of this, the boyfriend burned the building. Fields also said that she has not seen or heard from her boyfriend since.
