Enmore fisherman believed murdered

The body of a 29-year-old fisherman was yesterday morning discovered in a drain with what appeared to be a laceration to the head.

Lakeram Parsram, of Sheriga, Enmore North, East Coast Demerara, was found around 6:20 am yesterday, a short distance away from his home, neatly fitted in a drain aback a Mechanic Shop.

Stabroek News visited the scene and spoke to the owner of the Lot 103 Enmore North Mechanic Shop, Shafeez Salim Ali, who stated that one of his workmen, after opening the back gate, discovered the body.

“Them man open the gate deh and see a hat… Is when they go to pick up the hat they see de man in de drain,” the man said. Ali stated that the man was turned face down in the drain and appeared to be a “fresh dead”.

The man stated that Parsram had left his home at 6am and the discovery was made a mere 20 minutes after, concluding that it had t be a brief confrontation between him and the attacker.  Meanwhile, the dead man’s brother, Chaitnarine Parsram, who later visited the scene, said he did not believe his brother fell into the drain as was suggested by some onlookers. “His face was down and he was about 5’ 4’’ so his legs was turned upwards… He couldn’t fall because he woulda try to break his fall but his arms were straight to his side,” the man’s brother relayed to this newspaper. Stabroek News also spoke to the dead man’s sister, Rookmini Parsram, who said that her brother would only go home for a period of three days and would spend most of his time at sea, sometimes up to two weeks at a time. She stated that on the last occasion he visited, he indicated to her that he was experiencing some sort of problem with his landlord and this resulted in him opting to find a new place. Until he was in a better position to do so, she said he was staying at a friend’s home.

“He is not renting there or anything, just a three day he there because our place here is small… The person he is staying with claim he leave there 6 o’ clock but the place they discover him was (at) 6 o’clock and the police get the report at five minutes past 6 so I don’t know how he can leave at 6 and be discovered at 6 too”, she stated.

The woman told this newspaper that when she viewed her brother’s body, she observed what she described as a severe hit to the side of his head and noted that the area was swollen. “His head was really swollen, no other part of his body seemed to have been injured,” she pointed out.

She added too that the man had been working at sea since the age of 16.

At the time of this newspaper’s visit, the parents of the dead man were assisting the police with investigations and it was understood that no arrest had yet been made.
