Girl, 17, remanded over ganja possession

A 17-year-old girl who allegedly had marijuana in her possession for the purpose of trafficking was remanded to prison yesterday when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Kayana Lewis of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge, when it was read to her by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry in Court 1.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman said that on November 20, Lewis arrived on a flight at the Ogle International Airport, with her luggage along with tyres. The police searched her and discovered a transparent bag which contained stems with leaves taped inside one of the tyres. They arrested her. They later weighed the stems and leaves suspected to be marijuana and found that the quantity was 1,464 grammes.

Magistrate Sewnarine- Beharry remanded Lewis to prison until November 27 when she will appear again in Court 1.
