Minibus driver charged over Houston road death

A minibus driver, charged with causing the death of a pedestrian by driving dangerously, was granted $400,000 bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates Court, yesterday.

Colin Welch, 29, of 1517, 19th Street, Diamond Housing Scheme was not allowed to plead when the charge was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry in Court 1.

Police Prosecutor Mavis Grant said that on November 25, at Houston Public Road, Welch drove his minibus PJJ 5765 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of 59-year-old Tony Singh, who was on the pedestrian crossing at the time of the accident.

Singh was said to have sustained multiple injuries to his body, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Georgetown Public Hospital.

The prosecution had no objection to bail, which was set for $400,000. The matter will continue on December 18 in Court 1.
