Colombian women jailed for illegal entry

Two Colombian nationals who entered Guyana by sea illegally, were on Friday jailed, fined and ordered deported after they were arraigned before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Facts stated that on October 23, in Essequibo, Linda Gomez and Yali Joanna, entered Guyana by sea and disembarked without the consent of an immigration official. The facts of the case were that the two women entered the Pomeroon River, through the Guyana-Venezuela border and at 15:00 hrs immigration officials intercepted them in the vicinity of Bartica and requested to see their travel documents.

Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte said that after checks were made of their passports it was revealed that there was no entry stamp.
The magistrate then fined the women $30,000 each with six months imprisonment.
Deportation was ordered thereafter.
