GPHC reinstates nurses dismissed over morphine theft

Two Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) nurses who were recently dismissed after being implicated in the larceny of morphine injections will be reinstated, the hospital announced yesterday.

The nurses were sacked on December 3 after they were suspected of stealing five vials of morphine injections and the action prompted protests by the representatives of the nurses and the Guyana Public Service Union. Another nurse, who was in charge of the administration of morphine in the hospital, was suspended after she reported that morphine had gone missing from the hospital.

In a statement, the GPHC said that its Board of Directors met on Thursday on the situation and decided that the disciplinary letters issued to the three nurses would be rescinded.

However, it added that they would also be written to on violations of the GPHC’s protocol for ordering, storage and use of narcotics.

The Board and management of the hospital have also taken a decision to refer the matter to the Nursing Council, the release added.

Nurses have led protests recently in front of the institution in support of their sacked colleagues, calling for their reinstatement.
