Environmental impact study for road should include comparison with rail

Dear Editor,

I refer to an article published in your Friday, December 23, 2011 edition (‘IDB approved $72M for impact study of Lethem road’).
Some months ago, I had written to your letters column calling for consideration of a rail link between the coast and south Guyana/northern Brazil (‘Rail link important for our economic, political ties with Brazil’ SN, August 16, 2011). I therefore wish to take this opportunity to call on the relevant agency to expand the ESIA for the Georgetown-Lethem road to also look at the comparative environmental impact of road versus rail.

Yours faithfully,
David Yhann
