It is not possible to earn three pensions simultaneously until 65

Dear Editor,

Another Nadirism needs to be excised from the body of misinformation regarding
pension benefits alluded to in an earlier publication. These occur as follows:

i)  Age 55 – for established public servants only (contracted employees receive gratuity half-yearly calculated at 22.5% of salary).

ii) Age 60 –

NIS for those whose contributions are fully paid up. (Note: There is a disproportionately high incidence of private employers who have neither pension schemes, nor contribute to the NIS; not to mention the self-employed).

iii) Age 65 –

Government Old Age Pension becomes payable.

It is clear from the above that it is not possible to earn three pensions simultaneously until age 65. It would be useful therefore if the former Minister of Labour could produce the relevant statistics to support his spurious assertion.

Yours faithfully,
E B John
