What will be left for our children to enjoy?

Dear Editor,

While the budget cuts attract public attention and in large measure approbation, something more serious, more cynical is taking place and there is no mass protest as such. I refer to the rape of our God-given resources under this administration, not for the benefit of Guyanese. The reallocation of CLICO – Caribbean Resources Limited Timber lease to a foreign coffee retailer unit makes a joke of the words we sing from our hearts in our National Anthem. When we see non-Guyanese daily destroying our streams and reshaping our river banks, some already not recognizable, we must be pained when we recite the National Pledge. Are our leaders serious, when our gold and diamonds are harvested by brutal means for the benefit of those who make no meaningful contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of Guyana?

When we capriciously sell government GT&T shares to non-Guyanese, with no acceptable explanations, this is another misuse of our patrimony.

What will be left for our children to enjoy? The pork-knockers must be turning in their graves not to mention Cheddi Jagan, LFS Burnham, HN Critchlow and others.

Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green, JP
