The Alleyne sisters are not the only members of one family to be successful on the track

Dear Editor,

First I would like to congratulate Andrea Fortune on her success and hope that she can bring glory to Guyana. For too long our athletes have been handicapped for various reasons.

I would like to add to an article dated April 20, whose headline read ‘Fortune runs in the family like father like daughter.‘ The writer said, “Never before has Guyana seen such success in one family on track since the Alleyne sisters.”

However, there are others. Marva Caesar beat June Griffith at the National Championships in Berbice. It was a rain-affected meeting and the race was 150 metres instead of this normal 100 and 200 metres. Her brother and sister also went to the Nationals representing EC Demerara. Marva’s son Kwame Caesar was the National Sprint Champion. At present her nieces, the Daniels twin sisters are doing well; one was short-listed for the Carifta Games.

I also remember the Clarkson sisters running for Tutorial High School, and I am pretty sure there are more.

Yours faithfully,
Eustace Ageda
