The Ministry of Education should have an adequate number of officers to enforce the education code

Dear Editor,

There can be no perfection in human behavioural patterns in the home, school, church or workplace because of the machinations of the mind. Nonetheless, there should be some effort to set good standards. Over the years there has been a deterioration in moral values which we should strive to arrest.

Misdemeanours have been witnessed and reported in our schools. It is advocated that corporal punishment should be abolished, but we need to implement other measures to ensure there is discipline in our schools among teachers and equally of course in the student body.

The home must train the child properly and the Ministry of Education should have an adequate number of officers to monitor and enforce the Education Code.

Another recently established institution seems to be experiencing problems. Complaints are being made about the night shelter in East La Penitence which is a welcome place for homeless and destitute persons. Here they could spend the night and have meals and other facilities. One knows there are rules but they are being violated by some of the lodgers. Stealing from one another seems to be prevalent. The authorities should deal severely with perpetrators expelling them when they are caught. There has been some amount of altercation over accusations of stealing.

Let Guyana be a place of law, order, discipline and justice.

Yours faithfully,
