‘Great Obeahman’ not ‘Political Obeahman’

Dear Editor,

I am offering a correction to a reference made in the article ‘Martin Carter and his poems’ published in Arts on Sunday in the Sunday Stabroek, June 24, 2012.  The reference is to one of Martin Carter’s prose publications whose title was given as ‘Wanted: A Political Obeahman.’  That was an error in the writing which I failed to correct in reading over the work.

The correct title is ‘Wanted: A Great Obeahman,’ and was an editorial in Thunder, October 22, 1955 written by Carter.  The great poet produced most of his prose publications in the theoretical organ of the PPP which he also served editorially. Carter told a story about this editorial. Shortly after it appeared a man walked into the office, introduced himself and said, “I is the man you want.”

The first collection of these prose writings was published as The Martin Carter Prose Sampler edited by Nigel Westmaas in Kyk-Over-Al 44, 1993.  Selections of the prose also appear in University of Hunger: Collected Poems and Selected Prose edited by Gemma Robinson, London: Bloodaxe Books, 2006.

I apologise for the error.

Yours faithfully,
Al Creighton
