What did the PNC do for Buxton?

Dear Editor,

Recently, President Ramotar visited the Buxton community and officially opened Tipperary Hall. This is a place that holds great significance for Buxtonians and Guyana as a whole. It is a hallowed hall which slipped into disrepair over the years, hence former President Jagdeo deemed it best to restore dignity and respect for this national treasure and built a spanking new edifice. The sitting President was there to do official duties with all the ceremony befitting a head of state.

Instead of applauding President Ramotar for his good work in Buxton Dr David Hinds castigates the President for what he claims is distorting history (‘In his remarks in Buxton Ramotar made no distinction between the pre-1955 PPP and the post-1955 PPP’ SN, June 16). This distortion according to Dr Hinds stems from the President‘s remark that “the PPP has a long history of cordial relations with Buxton.” He took umbrage with the statement because in his estimation the PPP has done very little while at the same time had a hostile relationship with his beloved village.

This could not be further from the truth; history is replete with instances of the PPP having good and friendly relations with the East Coast village; rather it is the PNC to which Dr Hinds now pledges his allegiance which is to be blamed and to whom that statement should be directed. What has the PNC done for Buxton? Their contribution to the upliftment of the village is very small.

Yours faithfully,
Neil Adams
