Cell phones should not be allowed in schools

Dear Editor,

I am a student at the West Demerara Secondary School. Recently we were discussing cell phones and how they affect children in school. Some points struck me which I think need to be highlighted.

Cell phones shouldn’t be allowed in school because they can distract from school work and disturb other students who are trying to study. The guys will either be playing music or games.

Many tests are done in the first two terms and then finally there is the annual examination. Many kids use cell phones to cheat in tests; either they text the answer or ask for answers which is totally unfair to the other kids.

Some children take pictures in the bathroom and text during school periods, while some others text rumours about other kids.

Some people said in the discussion that cell phones should be allowed in school in case of an emergency, but you don’t need to have your phone in the classroom because your parents and teachers know where you are.

Yours faithfully,
Vanika Nohar
