Siren vehicles also have to show a sense of reasonable care

Dear Editor,

Please allow me two comments in your letter columns.

1.I would like to express compliments to Mr Imran Sacoor, President of the Berbice Chamber of Commerce, and his team of very efficient persons who pulled off a great event in the form of the Chamber’s 10/10 softball competition on Saturday last at the Albion Sports Complex Ground.

The co-ordination of the entire programme was unmistakeable and the response from participants and spectators was equally mature.

Great job, Imran and Team! Keep it up.

2.The laws governing citizens’ reaction to sirens and other similar warnings emanating from Fire Tenders, Ambulances, Police and Army vehicles, etc. notwithstanding, isn’t there an element of care to be exercised by the drivers of these vehicles? A water tender is an extremely large and heavy vehicle, the control of which, with water in its chambers, is not child’s play and should therefore not be driven in a manner suggestive that no other vehicle is on the road.

Very often it is difficult for other drivers to ascertain where the Fire Tender is, considering the network of roads, particularly in the city. It will therefore be foolhardy for drivers of “Siren” vehicles to conclude that they have an unconditional freeway.

They too have to exercise a sense of reasonable care.

I wish those injured a speedy recovery, especially my fried “Pacer” De Abreu.

Yours faithfully,
T. Jadunauth
