2011 was good year for softball cricket

The Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) said last year was a good year for the body.

According to a press release from the organization, the GFSCA, organised and managed two nationwide softball tournaments held in three categories.

For each tournaments the male and female Open and the male over 40 years old categories were run simultaneously.

The GFSCA also staged the Stag/El Dorado-sponsored tournament during the first half of last year while the bakery giant Bakewell-sponsored tournament was held in the latter half of the year.

One of the crowning achievements for the year was the staging of the inaugural Guyana Softball Cup tournament held in October.

The tournament, which was run from 28-30 saw for the first time in Guyana’s softball history an international tournament taking place which featured some 16 teams.

The tournament featured eight teams from Canada and the United States of America along with eight local teams.

With the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited staging another fantastic 10/10 softball tournament, softball players and fans could definitely say that 2011 was a good year for the sport.

Also in March, the GFSCA sent two teams to participate in the Florida Cup tournament which was held in Florida, USA.

They also sent a team to participate in the Independence Cup in July in New York, USA.

“Our greatest regret and loss was the tragedy that happened to our beloved member Bedi Ramjeewan,” said Ricky Deonarin, one of the founder members of the GFSCA.

For this year, the GFSCA says it plans to hold two more nationwide tournaments as well as send two teams to participate in the Florida Cup which will be held from March 2-4.

They will also send a team to participate in the Independence Cup in New York in July and one team to Toronto, Canada at the end August.

Inter-County softball cricket action will commence September 30 while the first nationwide tournament will begin on January 22.

The tournament will be sponsored by The City Mall of Regent and Camp Street with the final set for May 6.

The GFSCA, in the release stated that it would like to thank their sponsors and all those who supported their initiative in 2011.

This year, the GFSCA said it was looking forward to working with teams who support the GFSCA in carrying out its mandate.

The GFSCA would also like to encourage other softball organizations to state the date of the final when staging competition for the benefit of the fans.
