Lady Jags go under 1-5 to Cuba

Guyana’s Lady Jags lost their opening game of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championships to hosts Cuba 1-5 on Saturday at the Estadio Pedro Marrero Ciudad de La Habana ground.

The Guyanese will today face neighbours Trinidad and Tobago in their second group game after Trinidad’s 0-1 defeat to Puerto Rico.

Guyana’s Otesha Charles was sent off after receiving a red card in the 26th minute.

Lady Jags forward Otesha Charles, was  red carded in the 26th minute.

Despite being a player down Guyana took the lead in the 35th minute  when Ashley Savona scored.

But the pressure of being a player down finally took its toll on the players in humid conditions with the Cubans drawing level on the stroke of half time through R. Galan.

The Cubans  made the most of their one player advantage by hitting in four unanswered goals in the second half through M. Perez (56), R. Pelaez (60, 90), M. Goitizolo (83).

The team was hosted last evening by Guyana’s Ambassador to Cuba Mitra Ali at her residence, must win their remaining two games in order to stand a chance of advancing to the CONCACAF finals.
