Super League off to enterprising start

The Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Super League got off to an enterprising start with three matches in Bartica and East Coast Demerara Sunday.

Two matches were played at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground with NA United of Berbice getting the better of Grove Hi Tech of East Bank Demerara 3-1.

In the other fixture, Amelia’s Ward of Upper Demerara squeezed past Buxton Stars of East Demerara 2-1.

Amelia’s Ward got their goals from Travis Waterton in the 20th minute and Jermain Batson in four minutes later.

Kevon Barry pulled back one for Buxton Stars in the 66th minute.

Several matches will be played off on Sunday at Linden, Bartica and West Demerara.

At Bartica, home side Millballers will do battle with Grove Hi Tech starting at 19:00 hours.

Amelia’s Ward will collide with Buxton Stars at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground also starting at 19:00 hours while at Den Amstel ground; the home team will take on NA United.

The tournament was not played last year and there is a noticeable absence of Georgetown teams.

Teams affiliated to the Georgetown Football Association were omitted from the tournament due to the ongoing dispute between the GFA and its parent body the GFF.

Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, was scheduled to meet with executives of the two sides yesterday but only representatives from the GFA turned up.
