GFF Super League kicks off

-Alpha United begins title defence

Alpha “the Hammer” United will begin the defence of their National Super League title when they take on Amelia’s Ward United as the League kick off today with five matches at three venues.

The Georgetown-based Alpha United will travel to the mining town of Linden to clash with Amelia’s Ward in the first game of a double header at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.

Alpha returned to the fold of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) after paying a $50,000 fine for participating in tournaments not sanctioned by the local governing body.

Just a week ago the team was competing in the NAMILCO tournament but withdrew suddenly and opted to return to the GFF to compete in the League.
The League was last played in 2010 when Alpha won it and later represented Guyana at the CONCACAF Club Championships.

The other game set for the MSC ground will bring together Milerock of Linden and BK Western Tigers of Georgetown at 20:00 hours. The Amelia’s Ward/Alpha match will start at 18:00 hours.

BCC Rosignol United will be at home to East Coast Demerara team Buxton United at the Blairmont Community Centre ground.
Two games are carded for the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground in West Demerara with the home side Den Amstel coming up against Victoria Kings of East Coast Demerara while Seawall also of West Dem will collide with Pele of Georgetown.

Amelia’s Ward and Den Amstel secured places in the Super League following their successes in the Super League Playoffs.
They have replaced the struggling Bakewell Topp XX of Linden and Liquid Gold of Bartica.

Pele and Western Tigers were also drafted in to replace the Guyana Defence Force and Camptown who are currently involved in tournaments organized by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) that are at logger-head with the GFF.

Both GDF and Camptown are playing in the NAMILCO football tournament organized by Fruta Conquerors, an affiliate of the GFA.
Preliminary matches in the Super League will run until April 29 paving the way for the knockout stage.
The top two teams will be eligible to represent Guyana at the CONCACAF Club championships.
