St. Stanislaus hockey club to make debut

The newly-formed St. Stanislaus Hockey Club (Saints) will make their debut as the 2012 hockey season opens tomorrow with two matches in the John Fernandes Insurance Services Second division league.

The two matches will be played at Saints ground on Carifesta Avenue.
The first match scheduled to commence at 14:00hrs sees the newly formed Saint Club will clash with Airbenders, a side made up primarily of the women’s national squad in what is expected to be a stern test for the youngsters.

The promising youngsters will rely heavily on their versatile players Joel Hunt and Leroy Jack who are both members of the current national under-21 squad.

Ulrica Sutherland and Alysa Xavier remain the centre of the Airbenders solid defence while the attack will be boosted by the return of former national Carol Caines to competition.

The second game will feature powerhouse teams Hikers and defending champions Georgetown Cricket Club.
Hikers have shortlisted a strong line up which will include Randy Hope, the Branford brothers, Reon and Aryody along with brothers Shaquille and Jamarj Assanah.

The potent Hikers line-up makes them one of this year’s favourites to take the crown.  GCC’s efforts will be spearheaded by the experienced midfield of Shad Fernandes as well as Stuart Gonsalves and Shaka Gill.
Bully off is at 14:00 hours.

Two games will also be played next Saturday at the same venue.

All Greys, a line up of former national players will do battle with Saints at 14:00 hours followed by a clash between Old Fort and Hikers at 16:00 hours.

President of the Guyana Hockey Board, Philip Fernandes disclosed that the Board is also planning to run off a one-day competition at the Guyana National Stadium where most of the nation’s hockey players will be on show at the country’s premiere venue.
