Lewis guides Edghill to silver medal

Idi Lewis has been a successful player for Guyana winning the Caribbean Junior boys singles title and  gaining a bronze medal as a senior player. Yesterday he got his first taste of success as a coach when he led Chelsea Edghill to a silver medal at the annual Caribbean Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Cadet and Junior championships in Havana, Cuba.

Edghill  was beaten in the final of the girls’ 15 years and under category by Cuba’s Lovett Valdez.
Valdez won the match 11-8, 12-10, 11-7 and 11-8.

The other female player in the girls’ 18 years-and- under category Akecia Nedd reached the quarterfinal round before losing  to Yuensi Diaz of Cuba 3-1. Top U-15 boys player Shemar Britton, reached the last 16 before bowing out to Enzenat Lazaro of Cuba 3-1.

In the Cadet Boys’ team event, the  15-years-and-under team of Britton, Elishaba Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Bryton Murray and Joshua Lalbachan placed fifth in the seven-team, round-robin competition with seven points.

The Dominican Republic won the category with Cuba `1’ second; Trinidad and Tobago third; Cuba `2’ fourth; Jamaica sixth and Aruba seventh.

The Junior boys team of Stefan Corlette, Sachin Panday and David Duncan placed fifth in the boys’ 18 years and under category with five points.

That category was won by the Dominican Republic with Cuba’s first and second teams second and third respectively.Jamaica was fourth  and Suriname and Aruba sixth and seventh respectively. The Guyana team is due back home tomorrow.
