Wismar Secondary triumphs at World Athletics Day C/ships

This year’s Carifta Games 100 and 100 metres under-17 finalist Tevin Garraway continued his dominant streak despite wet condition at the World Athletics Day Championship held at the Police Sports Club ground, yesterday.

The short, stocky 16-year-old separated himself from the field in the first 30 metres and did not ease off the throttle until the 90-metre mark to clock a comfortable 11.4s and win the event.

Samuel Doris clocked at 11.8s for second while Jason Yaw was a distant third with 12.1s in the under-18 boy’s 100 metres.

The meet, which is basically for juniors (under-18) and youths (under-16), saw Christianburg Wismar Secondary from Linden running away with the top position in the schools’ competition with 48 points.

New Campbeville Secondary School was a distant second with 30 points while New Silver City Secondary from Linden was third with 21 points.

New Amsterdam rounded out the top four finishers with 15 points.

Shoquane Daniels turned in as what can be deemed as a reasonable performance due to the conditions in the female under-18 100 metres clocking 12.7s for the top spot.

Former national youth sprinter Deja Smartt, made a surprising return to the track after a series of hamstring injuries that has put a hold on the talented female from East Coast as she clocked in at 12.9s for second place putting the in-form Tirana Mitchell in third  place with a time of 13.2s.

Inter Guiana Games (IGG) silver medalist Ernesto Thomas  ran a brilliantly-timed 800 metres as he tactically executed his race plan before sprinting away in the final 100 metres to claim victory in the event.

Shomaine Daniels was also in the thick of things running away with the female under-18 400 metres in a time of 1:01.7s.

The 1000 metres girls under-16 event had some thrills for the small crowd in attendance as Cassey George and Cassie Kirton entertained the crowd with an exciting back-and-forth battle before Kirton narrowly edged  George for the first place spot with a time of 3:16.4s while George clocked 3:16.9s for second.

Natricia Hooper took some time off from the 400 metres event to run away with first place in the female under-16 1500 metres that brought her club mates to their feet while her club mate Ruth Samaogan failed to replicate the performance in the female under-16 80 metres dropping to second place behind Avon Samuels.

Raphael Tyrell  threw away the male under-16 shot putt with a distance of 10.2 metres to defeat Kaiomo Dover (8.52m) and Jomal Johnson (7.62m) who were second and third respectively.

As the curtains close on World Athletics Day, the attention will shift to Sunday’s President’s/Jefford Track Classic at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden.
