Nine West Demerara football teams vying for big cash and trophies

Nine football teams from the West Demerara will battle for lucrative cash prizes and trophies when the Stag Beer/West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Senior League Competition kicks off at the Den Amstel ground on Sunday.

This was disclosed at the launching of the event yesterday in the boardroom of ANSA McAl at Beterverwagting.
According to Secretary of the WDFA, Adrian Giddings, Den Amstel, Sea Wall FC, Eagles FC, Uitvlugt Warriors, Stewartville, Goed Fortuin Beavers, Bagotville, Pouderoyen and Wales will be taking part in the tournament.

Giddings disclosed that the competition will initially be played in a round-robin format. The four teams with the most points will advance to the semi-finals.

There will be a double header on Sunday with Uitvlugt taking on Stewartville at 14:00hrs while Dem Amstel will try to capitalize on home ground advantage when they tackle Sea Wall FC at 16:00hrs.

Marketing Manager of ANSA McAL, Troy Cadogan said that his company is pleased to be sponsoring the WDFA senior league and  will continue to do so to resuscitate the game.

Cadogan mentioned that ANSA McAL has flexed its corporate muscle from the Sweet 16 competitions all the way up to the national team, the Golden Jaguars in terms of its World Cup qualifier bid for Brazil in 2014.

President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Franklin Wilson commended ANSA McAL for their continued support of football at all levels and urged other corporate entities in Guyana to do the same.
Wilson also wished the competing teams well.

Assistant Secretary/ Treasurer of WDFA, Chevon Monchoir who was also at the launching, thanked ANSA McAL for their sponsorship of the tournament and echoed Cadogan by stating that the event is a shot in the arm for football on the West Demerara.
