GRFU names players for National Sevens Squad

The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has announced the names of the players for the National Sevens Squad which will commence practice matches from today in preparation for the International Rugby Board 2013 Rugby World Cup Regional Qualifier and NACRA 2012 Caribbean Championships.

These events are scheduled for August 25 and 26 at the Twin Elms Grounds in Ottawa, Canada
The selected Guyana-based players are asked to be at the National Park for 14:00hrs for the commencement of today’s practice.
Overseas-based  players named to the squad are Trinidad and Tobago-based Richard Staglon, Ronald Mayers and Claudius Butts, Australia-based Kevin McKenzie and UK-based Rupert Giles.

The Rugby World Cup will take place in Moscow, Russia, next year. Nine core teams are automatically qualified to be joined by an additional 15 teams drawn from the Regional Qualifiers. The North America & Caribbean Qualifier will be contested by USA, Canada, the eight Caribbean countries and Mexico.

The Ottawa tournament is combined with the NACRA Caribbean Championships, including Mexico. Guyana is the current champion having won the tournament six years in succession and is clearly the favourite to win the tournament and contest against Canada and the USA for the two Regional Qualifying World Cup places.

Qualifiers for Regional Championships and the 2013 Sevens World Cup are also taking place in Africa, Asia, South America, Europe and Oceania. The nine core teams already qualified for the tournament are Kenya, South Africa, Argentina, England, Russia, Wales, Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa.

The local players expected to be at the National Park are as follows: Dwayne Schroeder, Rickford Cummings, Vallon Adams, Cloyd Prowell, Peabo Hamilton, Oneil Charles, Cyon Kitt, Theodore Henry, Christopher Singh, Ryan Gonsalves, Claude Alexander, Rondell McArthur, Elwin Chase, Walter George, Avery Corbin, Breon Walks, Kester Lowe, Blaise Bailey, Lance Adonis, Akeem Fraser, Carl Lewis, Leon Greaves, Troy Bascom, Joseph Rahaman, Samuel Leach and Marvin Stevenson.
