KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Teadie Crawford wrote her name in the record books of the Regional Women’s Twenty20 Tournament yesterday with a destructive spell of bowling that undermined Dominica’s fragile batting and catapulted St. Lucia to a confidence-boosting, 37-run victory.
Crawford grabbed 7-7 from her allotment of four overs, three of which were maidens, as the Dominicans, chasing 117 for victory, were dismissed in 19.5 overs in the second game of the day at Chedwin Park here.
The spell propelled the St. Lucians to their first victory of the tournament, after hosts and tournament favourites Jamaica crushed them by 64 runs in their first match the previous day.
West Indies Women’s star Stafanie Taylor gave further evidence of her immense class, guiding the Jamaicans to a stroll past Barbados by 27 runs at Kensington Park, where Trinidad & Tobago, led by West Indies Women’s captain Merissa Aguilleira, stayed on a collision course with the hosts.
T&T won by eight runs under the Duckworth-Lewis Method , after an unexpected torrential rainstorm brought an early close to the second game at Kensington Park in the Jamaica capital.
A half-century from discarded West Indies Women’s batter Cordel Jack led St. Vincent & the Grenadines to their first victory of the tournament by 18 runs over Grenada in the opener at Chedwin Park.
Crawford, a 17-year-old off-spinner, took charge, after the Dominicans had battled, reaching 41 for two after five overs.
She snared the next five wickets – three bowled, two lbw – in the space of 10 deliveries, leaving the Domincans rocking on 46 seven in the eighth over.
Crawford added the scalp of Dominica player/coach Pellam Jno Baptiste in her final over to almost single-handedly complete the demolition job, as Junicar Valentine remained steady to make the top score of 20 not out for the losers.
Roylin Cooper had gathered 33 to anchor the St. Lucia batting, as Valentine started a notable all-round performance with 2-11 from two overs and Bertina Berkitt snatched 2-22 from four overs.
Taylor gave firm evidence of why the ICC, the sport’s World governing body, voted her the Women’s World Player-of-the-Year for 2011, collecting two fours and one six in carrying her bat for 48 not out from 49 balls, anchoring the Jamaicans to 98 for seven from their of 20 overs, after they chose to bat in the morning game at Kensington.
No other batter from the host country reached double figures, as Danielle Small snared 3-6 from two overs with her off-spin.
Accurate bowling and alert fielding from the Jamaicans on a slow, low pitch, condemned Barbados to slump to 46 for seven with five overs remaining.
West Indies Women’s all-rounder Shakera Selman, the Barbados captain, hit the top score of 24 for her side before she was one of three wickets that Taylor grabbed for 13 runs in her four overs, as the visitors were bowled out for 71 in their 20 overs.
It was the second victory for the Jamaicans, putting them at the top of the table, with their arch-rivals T&T, on a maximum 10 points.
T&T again suffocated their opponents’ batting, as Guyana decided to bat, and were restricted to a modest 76 for six from their 20 overs with Felicia Walters the most successful bowler with 2-9 from four overs.
No Guyanese batter reached 20, but Melanie Henry scored 18 not out and Shemaine Campbelle, the West Indies Women’s player, made 18.
The weather made a dramatic turn for the worse, when T&T returned to chase, with sunny skies giving way to dark clouds and gale force winds.
T&T survived losing opener Lee Ann Kirby for 11 and West Indies Women’s batter Britney Cooper for one, staying in front of the D/L Par Score until the weather interrupted on 33 for two after seven overs.
Jack gave the West Indies Women’s selectors a timely reminder about her quality, when she struck five fours from 00 balls, leading SVG to 104 for three from their 20 overs, after her side were put in to bat at Chedwin Park.
Hazel Ann Foster was not out on 18 and was the only other SVG batter that came to grips with the Grenada bowling.
Jack followed up with 2-20 from her four overs and Latoya Providence bagged 2-15 from four overs, as Grenada were restricted to 86 for eight from their 20 overs with their captain Afy Fletcher leading the way with 20. Today is a rest day in the tournament before play resumes tomorrow when St. Lucia face Grenada in the morning at Kensington Park, where SVG meet Dominica in the afternoon, while T&T play traditional sporting rivals Barbados in the morning at Chedwin Park, hours before Jamaica tackle Guyana.
