B/dos clip T&T wings with four-wicket win

BAYFIELD, Barbados, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago were brought down to earth by archrivals Barbados, after suffering defeat in the second round of the Regional Under-19 one-day Championship here  yesterday.

Asked to bat, Trinidad & Tobago were all out for 197 in 49.4 overs and Barbados then put together a measured run chase, scoring 13 runs in the penultimate over to win with six balls to spare.

Captain Shai Hope, who hit a century in Sunday’s opening round, led Barbados to victory with an accomplished 61.
T&T, who had made an emphatic start to the tournament on Sunday when they crushed Leeward Islands by 171 runs, failed to repeat that bravado.
Captain Vikash Mohan top-scored with 62 while opener Stephen Wharwood got 35 and wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran, 34, but Barbados kept the lid on their scoring.

Left-arm spinner Chad Williams claimed four for 24 while fast bowler Darnell Greenidge picked up three for 14.
Greenidge struck twice with the fifth and sixth delivery of the ninth over with the score on 28, removing Jeremy Solozano to a catch at the wicket for 16 and Andy Gobin to the first of five consecutive lbw decisions.

Mohan and Wharwood then guided the innings with a fluent 52 for the third wicket off 13.5 overs.
Wharwood stroked three fours off 64 balls until Williams trapped him lbw on the back foot and two deliveries later Ewart Nicholson, went lbw without scoring.

Mohan and Pooran propped up the middle-order in a stand of 66 off 94 balls, with  Mohan raising a fine half-century with a cut to backward point for four off medium-pacer Craig St. Hill.

Williams broke the alliance in the second over of his second spell when Mohan was lbw playing across the line, ending a 94-ball knock that contained six fours.

With his dismissal, the innings lost momentum as six wickets fell for 51 runs in 11 overs.
Pooran faced 47 deliveries and counted four boundaries before he was lbw to Aaron Jones.
Tevin Robertson had an early wicket as Shayne Moseley was well caught at square-leg by Nairon Motilal low down running in, as Barbados slipped to ten for one.

But Hope and and St. Hill, who got 42, linked-up in an entertaining partnership worth 99 off 163 balls to put the Barbadians en course for victory.
St. Hill faced 89 balls with no boundaries before he came inside the wicket and was lbw to left-arm spinner Motilal (2-34).

Barbados lost four wickets for 51 runs, including Hope who was eventually bowled by off-spinner Mohan with the fifth ball of the first over of the batting power-play in the 39th over, after striking three fours from 105 deliveries in 126 minutes at the crease. However, Marlon Welcome-Goodman stood firm with an unbeaten 27 to see Barbados home.
