Guyana upsets T&T at scrabble

After 14 years Guyana has finally secured a win over Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean Scrabble Championship, prevailing in twenty of the 36 games played yesterday at the Bank of Guyana.

Observers consider this a major upset for the twin island republic  who arrived in Guyana with the intention of retaining the championship trophy.

However, the door is not yet closed on Trinidad as they can still capture the championship trophy should the championship end in a three-way tie. This means that Guyana will have to defeat Barbados today if they really want to put their hands on the championship trophy.

Trinidad can only retain the trophy if Barbados defeat Guyana today and then go on to lose to the defending champions tomorrow.

Guyana’s Captain Abigail McDonald said that they recognized the situation and will be going up against Barbados with some amount of optimism.  “Given Trinidad’s performance we are optimistic about facing Barbados. Since this tournament started fourteen years ago, Trinidad has played unbeaten against Guyana and against any other team they faced during that period.”

McDonald, however, said that they have a great chance of defeating Barbados and securing the championship trophy. Guyana at the last championship two years ago in Trinidad finished second behind them.

Representing Guyana were: Captain Abigail McDonald, Leon Belony, Moen Gafoor, Fred Collins, Ulric Harris and James Krakowsky.

McDonald with five games was the best performer in the two matches. She was followed by teammates Gafoor and Krakowsky with four games apiece.

Trinidad was led by Captain Brian Yates.

The Caribbean Scrabble Championship opened on Wednesday at the Status International (formerly Zoom Inn Hotel).
