Chanderpaul trio leads GYO to win over touring Perseverance Sports Club of T/dad

The Chanderpaul batting lineage shone brightly Wednesday as the trio of Tagenarine, Shivnarine and Khemraj Chanderpaul all scored runs to lead the Gandhi Youth Organization (GYO) to victory over the touring Perseverance Sports Club of Trinidad and Tobago.

Despite the relatively low-key status of the game, in time to come the cricket world will recognize this match as a rare occasion when all three Chanderpaul’s featured in a competitive cricket match.

All who were present were privileged to witness an exciting piece of history being made.

RARE OCCURRENCE! The Chanderpaul’s Shiv, left, Tagenarine, centre and Khemraj pose for a photo opportunity for Stabroek Sport after playing against Perseverance Sports Club of Trinidad.

Shivnarine’s father Khemraj, has played a major role in the development of the rock of the West Indies’ middle order batting while his grandson Tagenarine, already earmarked as a prodigy, is fast making a name for himself at the Under-15 and Under-19 levels of West Indies cricket as an opening batsman.

Playing at the small GYO ground on Woolford Avenue, Perseverance Sports Club, a division two team from Chaguanas, Trinidad, can take solace in the fact only one of the Chanderpaul’s scored a century against them as both sides fielded mostly over 40 players.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the second highest run scorer in West Indies cricket, relished in the opportunity to play alongside his father and son by scoring an unbeaten 117 laced with 12 fours and five sixes.

His father, who has a reputation of being a former batting maestro himself, scored a quick 20 with three boundaries in the final few overs to take GYO to 5 for 219 from 29 overs after they batted first. Tagenarine had earlier given GYO a good start with 44 which included seven fours before he retired hurt.

Dominic Edwards took three of the five wickets for Perseverance Sports Club, who in response struggled to 151 all out with the off spin of GYO stalwart Purshotam Shivraj taking 4 for 42 and the ambidextrous Tagenarine, displaying his full range of deliveries, collecting 3 for 14. Jerrol James made 38, and Raymond Nagapin 22 as Perseverance, who return to Trinidad on Monday, lost by 68 runs.
