Stage set for inaugural President’s Cup golf tournament

The stage is set for the inaugural President’s Cup golf tournament billed for tomorrow at the Lusignan Golf Club with local and international players competing for the prestigious event organized to promote golf and sports tourism in Guyana.

The event is being jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism, under the patronage of His Excellency President Donald Ramotar.

The Lusignan Golf Club will manage the event and provide other logistics support, President of the Lusignan Golf Club, Jerome Khan said.

Guyana’s President Ramotar in whose honour the tournament was named will tee off the event at 09:30 hours with over 45 players expected to be in action in the one-day Classic.

Jerome Khan said that players from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and several Caribbean territories have shown an interest in the tournament and already they are planning for next year’s event.

He also disclosed that the Course is in tip top shape.

“The fairways and roughs have been cut and the green is being sprinkled every night so the current dry season would not affect it.”

The inform Chatterpaul Deo who won two tournaments last month will be among several players who will be looking to take home the President’s Cup.

Other players in contention are Deo’s daughter Joaan who was also in winner’s row recently, Brian Hackett, Carlos Adams, Mohanlall Dinnanauth, Alfred Mentore,  Kishun Bacchus, Christine Sukhram, Rawle Moore, Troy Cadogan, Mark Lashley,  John Tracey, Munaff Arjune  William Walker and Patrick Prashad who have all shown good form this season.

The field will also include Colin Ming, Maurice Solomon, Dr. Ram Singh, Clifford Reis,

Lakeram Deosaran, Muntaz Haniff, Fazil Deo, Robert Hanoman, Mike Mangal, Andre Cummings,  Ronald Bulkan, Mike Guyadin and B. Deo.

Minister of Tourism Infaan Ali at the tournament launch recently said the event will be used as a platform to market the country as a golfing destination, on par with other Caribbean destinations.

“We are working from different angles in developing and expanding our tourism product. Golf has a special appeal to the upper and middle class market in the Caribbean; it has a target market,” Ali said.

He disclosed that his ministry will be working closely with the Lusignan Golf Club in creating a space for Guyana within the golf market.

He said the President’s Cup will be added to the annual tourism calendar and advertisement for the inaugural event.

Apart from overseas golfers, efforts are being made to have members of the diplomatic corps, business community and the discipline services compete.
