Drayton wins Junior Chess qualifiers

Top chess player Anthony Drayton won the Topco Juice-sponsored Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) junior chess qualifiers when that competition ended yesterday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club building Hadfield Street.

Drayton ended the seven man round robin competition with six points gained from five wins and two draws thereby securing his spot in the upcoming junior national chess championship when national champion Suhai Feng will defend his title.

The other qualifiers joining Feng and Drayton in the Closed national championships will be former junior chess champion Ron Motilall, Saeed Ali, Carlos Peters, Davion Mars, Dravin Drickpal and Trenton Bennett.

In addition to the seven players prizes were also awarded to Davendra Narain as the best under-16 player while Ethan Lee was awarded the best under-13 player.

President of the Guyana Chess Federation Shiv Nandalall said the championship was a good one which saw some 22 players competing.
He also said that the junior championship will take place in few weeks, but said the date will be announced shortly as the federation is still to come agree on a date.  Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) brand manager Alexis Langhorne said the company was pleased to be a part of the competition and will continue to work with the federation as long as they federation will have them. She also said that it is competition such as these will allow the sport to grow.
