Roraima Bikers Club pulls out of Five Stage race

When this year’s sixth annual ‘Ride for Life’ five-stage road race pedals off this Thursday, absent will be national cyclist and inaugural winner of the event Alonzo Greaves as well as his Roraima Bikers Club mates.

The club has written a letter to the Guyana Cycling Federation informing them of their decision.

According to a press release from the club, the decision was taken …”due to the fact that the federation and the organizers of certain races are condoning malicious and detrimental acts on our cyclist Alanzo Greaves.”

The Roraima Bikers club said although they have sent two correspondences to the federation requesting an investigation in the alleged incidents, “the federation has done nothing to resolve the matter.”

Greaves yesterday told Stabroek Sport that he will boycott the five-stage as well as the Caribbean Cycling Championships in Antigua later this month as a way of protesting the actions of a national cyclist, with whom he has had a number of conflicts.

“I’m boycotting the event because the federation is not doing anything about the situation. This is very serious because incidents like these can involve our lives as well as other cyclists, I have been protesting for quite some time now and nothing is coming out of it so this is my form of protest.”

He added: “I cannot be on a team with a guy that dislikes me because sometimes I’m sleeping and he could be tampering with my bike or he could also do something to me. I’m not comfortable with him on the national team so I won’t be going.”
