Guyana win short range title to make clean sweep of WIFSC

Guyana rifle shooters made a clean sweep of the West Indies Fullbore  Shooting Championships when they added the prestigious short range title to their collection dethroning Jamaica in the process yesterday at the Timehri Rifle ranges.

It was the perfect icing on the cake for the local marksmen who dominated the five-day regional championships held in Guyana for the first time in five years with the local shooting amassing a total of 1135 points with 73 V-bulls.

Guyana’s Lennox Braithwaite again led the assault for the Guyanese dropping just one point in the shoot held over 300, 500 and 600 yards to finish with 149 points and 12 V-bulls. He shot 49-4 at 300, 50-4 at 500 and 50-4 at 600.

Vice Captain Dylan Fields and Ransford Goodluck were also in top form with scores of 148 with 12 and 11 Vs respectively while captain Mahendra Persaud shot 147-12.

The other team scores for Guyana were Sigmund Douglas 141-6, John Fraser 140-10, Ryan Sampson 137-6 and Claude Duguid 125-4.

Jamaica secured the second position with 1123 and 74 V-bulls led by the inform David Rickman with 147-5 and Aubrey Yee-Sang 146-11.

Trinidad and Tobago captured the third position with 1100 points and 60 Vs led by Norris Gomez with 141-14 and M. Ackrill 141-6

Antigua/Barbuda continued their upward trend  at this level of competition finishing fourth with 1090 and 44Vs while Barbados placed fifth while Bermuda with only four shooters finished on 453 with seven Vs.

The Guyanese also won the Milex Cup, the symbol of long range shooting supremacy Saturday beating into second position Trinidad and Tobago while Jamaica placed third.

Braithwaite once again led the Guyanese’ charge with two possibles as his team totally overwhelmed their opponents.

The 1988 Sportsman of the Year who returned to competitive shooting recently was expected to take home the lion share of prizes for his outstanding performance during the championships at last evening’s presentation ceremony.

Guyana’s President Donald Ramotar, patron of the Guyana National Rifle Association and other dignitaries were to attend last evening’s prize giving  at the GDF Officers Mess at Camp Ayanganna.

The visiting teams will wing out today for their respective countries bringing an end to a pulsating week of shooting.
