Haifeng Su unbeaten after three rounds

National junior chess champion Haifeng Su remained unbeaten after three rounds of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Closed national junior championships following play of Saturday and Sunday.

Su moved a step closer to a successful title defence when he defeated two of his main rivals Anthony Drayton and former junior champion Ron Motilall.
Both players resigned after being placed in losing positions by the reigning junior champion. Motilall lost pieces in the endgame while Drayton too was unable to avoid a heavy loss of material or to extricate himself from a hopeless position.

Drayton has been the form player winning the junior qualifying tournament. He also recently returned from Suriname where he participated in the third annual Umada Cup tournament winning a trophy for the best Under-1700 rated player which incidentally also carried a US$700 prize.  The points’ standings after three rounds read: Haifeng Su three points, Davion Mars, Saeed Ali, Drayton and Carlos Petterson two points. Ron Motilall is on one point while two other players Dravin Drickpaul and Trenton Bennett are yet to score.

Play resumes this afternoon from 5pm at Olympic House, Kingston.
