International draughts tourney on Sunday at gymnasium

The International Draughts competition is set for this Sunday at the National Gymnasium, following closely on the heels of the Guyana Draughts Association’s Annual National Championships which ended last Sunday.

Jiaram Anderson, Khemraj Pooranmall and Michael Francis won their respective categories in the championships. In the B Division match played on Saturday Jiaram and Esan Anderson ended with 26 points each but in a close tie-breaking encounter Jairam edged out his opponent to take the B class title while L Wilson finished third with 24 points.

Winners in the Draughts Association championships display their trophies after last Sunday’s tournament.

In the C Division match Michael Francis won the category with 10 points, followed by Mitra Persaud and Roy Harris in second and third place, respectively.

When the competition continued on Sunday, Khamraj Pooranmall dominated the A Division match and won easily with 39 points after defeating division champion Carlton Simon, three games nil. Pooranmall was recently promoted to the division. Godfrey George placed second with 35 points, followed closely by Wilfred Robinson in third with 34 points.

The top three finishers were awarded with trophies, courtesy of the Trophy Stall.

Trophy Stall is also sponsoring another competition set for December.

The International Draughts tournament is being sponsored by the National Sports Commission/Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. All players are invited to participate. The tournament starts at 10am.
