Corbin calls out Best

By Emmerson Campbell

After unanimously defeating former WBC cruiserweight world champion, Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite two weeks ago to claim the vacant WBC CABOFE cruiserweight title, Sean Corbin has now called out local cruiserweight and heavyweight champion, Kurt Bess.

“My mission is to clean up those guys in Guyana” said the Trinidad and Tobago based Corbin via a telephone interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday. “I told them (the Guyana Boxing Board of Control) after I’m done with Braithwaite I want Bess, I even told Bess that after I beat Braithwaite I will be coming for him next, so he should be prepared.

According to executives of the professional boxing board,Bess is willing to step into the ring with the new CABOFE cruiserweight champion as early as this month end but only to defend one of his titles.

Sean Corbin

Corbin, 37, who is a former CABOFE light heavyweight champion with a record of 15 wins (10 KO’s) and three losses, stated that he is willing to fight Bess in any weight division. “I will come and fight him at any weight “Corbin boasted. “I will come back to Guyana and show my posse that I am on a mission it doesn’t matter if we fight at cruiser or heavyweight.

If the fight is inked soon, it would headline this month’s end Pro Am card which would also include young exciting prospects like Richard Williamson, Gladwin Dorway, Kishan Simon and others on show.

Corbin who was on a two-year hiatus before the Braithwaite contest, intimated that boxing fans can expect a more polished performance the next time he enters the ring.

“It would be a brutal battle if he can last 12 rounds, I had a lay off for two years because of my construction work and still defeated Braithwaite without a warm up fight, but now I have time to train and fight so my posse can expect a much better performance from me” Corbin assured. When Stabroek Sport contacted Bess yesterday, the national heavyweight champion who was knocked out in his last fight against former CABOFE cruiserweight champions Sean Cox earlier this year, assured his fans of a victory against Corbin should it be staged on November 30.

Kurt Bess

Said Bess” Corbin is a good fighter but he doesn’t have any power and he is slow, I don’t think he could stand up to my right hand”. Bess also told this publication that he also wants to avenge his loss to Cox early next year.

The six foot-four inch 33 year-old Bess is some four inches taller than Corbin and possesses a devastating right hand that has earned him three knockout victories in five wins. Bess also has five losses on his resume, four ended prematurely.
If the bout is staged this month end, boxing buff can look forward to an entertaining affair.
