Berbice TT tourney commences today

The Berbice table tennis Open championships will get underway at 9am today at the Berbice High School auditorium. The tournament is being sponsored by former Berbice players Souvenir Ramdehol, the 2009 Hall of Fame Realtor of Queen’s New York.

Tournament organizer Floyd Conway yesterday told Stabroek Sport that about 65 players are expected to participate in the competition from across a wide cross section of Berbice. Trophies and cash incentives will be at stake,

“All systems are in place,” said Conway adding… “I have invited president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Godfrey Munroe to the event.”

Munroe, who will be accompanied by former Caribbean junior boys’ champion Idi Lewis, is expected to declare the tournament open.

The competition is open to persons living and those who have been working in Berbice for the past three years.

According to Conway, there will be play in the U13, U15, U18 and open categories for both male and female players.

The top three finishers in each division will receive prizes while there will also be prizes for the most outstanding player, the most improved player and the most promising.  Players are expected from New Amsterdam, Skeldon, Rose Hall, and West Berbice.

Among some of the players expected to be in action in the Open competition are Gibran Hussein, Richard Bacchus, Levi Nedd, Omraj Singh, chopper Lakeram Sanichar, Dave Mangra, Ryan Alexander, Michael Newland, Brentnol Richards and Sherwin Sahadeo. The junior players expected to be on show are national U16 players Bryton Murray and Joshua Lallbachan, U13 selectee Jaden Conway, Julian Haniff, Nicolas Lawrence and Stephen Sankar.

Among the female players set to be on show are Desiree, Lancaster, Vida Moore and Petal Bennett.
