Sonia Noel, Designers’ Portfolio winners show at Guyana Folk Fest

The annual Guyana Folk Festival in New York had the added boost of upscale fashion on Sunday last, when Sonia Noel, along with the three winners of Designers’ Portfolio 2012 – Andy Cummings, Shameeza Subrattie and Mwanza Glenn—presented their designs at the event.

According to a press release, Cummings’ winning depiction of the ‘Hassar Curry’, kicked off the fashion segment in fine style. Subrattie paid tribute to powerful mothers with her signature yellow, black and green borrowed from the flag, while Glenn followed with his marriage of tropical glory and African majesty.

Sonia’s headlining presentation included her classic Amerindian collage art with layering of seeds, beads and bamboo motifs, textile art through unique tie-dye application.   “When I was invited to showcase my designs at the Guyana Folk Festival I immediately thought of including the winners because if I am serious about the industry I have to look at the big picture,“ Sonia was quoted as saying.
