Sonia Noel to launch magazine in January

Come January, 2013, Sonia Noel will debut yet another side to her business, a magazine titled after her latest clothing venture, makin’ style.

According to a press release, the magazine will aim to capture how “the Caribbean life” is lived through the eyes of trendsetters, visionaries, and movers and shakers. It will be published quarterly in full colour and glossy and will be “chock full of irresistible ad campaigns, clever merchandizing layouts and engaging advertorials”.

The plan is to distribute makin’ style in Guyana, in the region and throughout the Diaspora.

The release said too that the magazine will promote cultural inclusiveness and foster strategic and developmental growth, especially in the entertainment and arts sectors. “[The magazine] harnesses the very being of Caribbean couture, exploring the rich artistic diversity that makes us a Caribbean people. The magazine ultimately targets the ever-expanding Diaspora, keeping them in touch with their homeland and the current issues and events that shape the present,” the release said.

It added that makin’ style promises to be more than a periodical publication with feature stories. It will have “an edge, revealing interesting truths and catering to investigative minds,” and will treat “simple Caribbean realities with a refreshing honesty and a celebratory spirit”.

Persons associated with this upcoming publication include Sherry-Ann Dixon, London-based Guyanese journalist; Chester Francis, reporter for Jamaica Gleaner ; Laura Dowridge-Phillips, Editor with the Guardian Media Limited in Trinidad; Philippa Morish, President of Etiquette International, a Guyanese living in New York; Donn Thompson, international photographer, who has done shoots for magazines such as GQ, Interview, The Journal, and Sister 2 Sister; Kirk Cambridge-Delpeshe, Beauty Editor and former contributor to numerous magazines including O!, Essence, and Times; Steven Seedo, contributor to de Ware Tijd in Suriname; and Richard Young, creative director behind many of Sonia’s ventures. The Public Relations and Marketing team includes Ronnie Morris, CEO of the Barbados Music Awards and John Quelch and Sade Richardson, both of Sonia Noel’s Designs.

The first issue of makin’ style will be distributed free, the release said.

It quoted Sonia as saying, “the magazine comes at a time when there is much need for an all-inclusive publication. We plan to ensure wide coverage of every aspect of our folk, scenic beauty and culture.”
