Karatekas off to Barbados for Caribbean championship

A team of karatekas from the Association do Shotokan Karate departed yesterday afternoon for the 10th annual Caribbean Karate Championship which is being held at the Barbados Community College over the weekend.

The team which trains at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) will  be under the watchful eyes of Sensei Amir Khouri (6th Dan) and will see 25 karatekas, including World Champion Nathalie Gibson, in action. The July 13-14 contest will also be the first international competition for Mitesh Ramdhani, Aryan Singh, Nixon Cheeks, Medharishi Ramdhani and Sasha Shariff.

In a previous interview Gibson had told Stabroek Sport that she was confident about her chances of winning gold at the two-day championship. The Pan American champion who is in her early 30’s also hoped to have another encounter with a few of her opponents from last year’s World Cup International Karate Daigaku Championship which was held in Toronto, Canada.
