Gov’t fails to win adjournment of Parliament

A strenuous effort by the Government to have  today’s sitting of the National Assembly adjourned to further discuss disagreements on at least two of four local government bills was defeated by the combined opposition who voted down the motion brought by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.

Retender Amaila or scrap it – Ram, Gaskin

Analysts Christopher Ram and Ramon Gaskin say the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP) should be retendered internationally or scrapped entirely, while warning that the cost associated with the project is well over the country’s US$1.7 billion national debt.

Opposition livid at gov’t deferral of Parliament

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) yesterday condemned government’s postponement of today’s parliamentary sitting saying that it was a “cold calculated move” to delay debating the four local government bills but that with or without government the combined opposition will be present  for the session this afternoon.

At the end of the third day of the Guyana Police Force’s Inter Division track and field championships at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, ‘A’ Division was still in the lead with 214 points, 11 points ahead of defending champions, Headquarters who are on 203 points with Country Division third on 62 points and ‘B’ Division fourth with 58 points.

DETROIT,  (Reuters) – A U.S. bankruptcy court judge yesterday dealt a blow to Detroit’s public employee unions and pension funds opposed to the city’s historic bankruptcy filing by suspending legal challenges in Michigan state courts while he reviews the city’s petition for protection from creditors.
