Moses -in-the-cradle

Rhoeo spathacea commonly called Moses-in-the-cradle originated from the tropical areas of Central America.  This easy to grow perennial plant has thin leaves that grow from thick circular stems up to 8 inches or more in height forming a rosette.

The leaves are striped green on top, and reddish purple underneath.  The flowers are insignificant and white with a slight scent which is protected by a boat-like bract.
Moses-in-the-cradle is prized for its handsome foliage and decorative shape.

in the gardenThere are also two compact dwarf varieties similar to the regular one:  the dwarf green-striped variety with reddish purple leaves and the dwarf pink striped one with reddish purple leaves which is a slow grower.

This plant likes sunlight and a well-drained soil, and it should be fertilized with Miracle Gro All Purpose every two weeks. It makes an attractive border, and can be used as ground cover as well. It can be grown in separate clumps. It can be propagated by division, or from the seeds in the bracts.
The sap of this plant is an irritant, and you should avoid contact with the skin and eyes.
